Skaventide Box Set
Character level
This Warhammer Age of Sigmar Skaventide box set was painted to character level.
This project was special because it came from someone who was more than just a client. They are a dear friend, and someone who helped us a great deal during a moment when we needed it. So this was not just another box set to paint. It was a chance to put extra care, thought, and gratitude into a project for someone who had already shown that care to us.
Client instructions
This project was slightly different because we were trying to hide the fact that we were doing it as a gift. After all, you cannot just walk off with someone’s new box of miniatures without raising questions.
So we said we wanted to do some grimdark things for a video, which gave us the excuse we needed. Because of who this project was for, we wanted the final result to feel personal as well as polished. We used all of our painting skills while also trying new grimdark techniques, using colour, texture, basing, animal fur, glowing effects, and small narrative choices to make the box feel like a complete battlefield collection rather than just another set of painted miniatures.
The Story & Process
We wanted to show the same level of investment in the videos that we put into the models.
Across the three videos, we broke down the lore of the Skaventide set, explored the design of the Stormcast and Skaven, and used older Warhammer Fantasy ideas to show how you can make the lore your own. The goal was not just to paint the box. Have the design match the lore. But I think you already got that design vs lore it in the title.
Summarised Process
-

Texture Stage
We started by building texture into the models so the armour, cloth, fur, skin, and corrupted details would have more depth once paint was applied.
-

Prime & Paint
After priming, we blocked in the main colours for both sides of the box set, making sure the Stormcast and Skaven felt distinct while still belonging to the same project.
-

Adding Animal Fur
For the Skaven, we added animal fur to push the texture, filth, and creature-like quality of the models, giving them a more unsettling and physical presence.
-

Basing
Finally, we tied the project together with basing that helped the Stormcast and Skaven feel like they were fighting across the same ruined battlefield.
