Nurgle Great Unclean One

Showcase level

This Warhammer Nurgle Great Unclean One was painted to showcase level and magnetised so the client could swap between the greater daemon’s bloat options, I mean build options, sorry. The project focused on pale diseased flesh, varicose veins, weeping wounds, rust, verdigris, grime, and the unsettling visible warmth expected from one of Nurgle’s greater daemons. The goal was to make the model feel ancient, bloated, joyful, and horrifying, while keeping every option tied together as one finished showcase piece.

Client instructions

The client wanted this Great Unclean One to feel truly diseased and corrupted, so we pushed the plague and pestilence theme through the skin, wounds, metals, weapon, base, and smaller details. Because the model was magnetised, each option needed to feel like part of the same finished piece rather than a spare part added later. We used muted colours, enamel and ink washes, gore, rust, verdigris, animal fur, and toxic basing effects to make the model feel grimy without losing contrast. Inspired by the greater demon artworks of old we even added hair. Since this was part of a wider greater daemon collection, we also kept the base in theme with the client’s other models.

Summarised Process

  • Base Tones & Vein work

After priming, we painted in varicose veins and airbrushed the base flesh tones over the top to help them sit beneath the skin.

  • Enamels & Ink washes

Next, we used enamel and ink washes to give the model depth while keeping the colours muted, grimy, and diseased.

  • Now we paint in the details and add depth through shading

    Detailing

We added grimdark effects like gore, weeping wounds, animal fur, rust, verdigris, bruising, and other disgusting little details.

  • Basing

Finally, we kept the base in theme with the client’s other greater daemons and added a toxic trail.
