Logan Grimnar

Character level

This Warhammer 40,000 Logan Grimnar was painted to character level, with a focus on rich Space Wolves blue-grey armour, aged gold details, textured fur, weathered stone, and the presence expected from one of the Chapter’s most legendary leaders. We also wanted to give our own take on the Axe of Morkai, the daemon-bound weapon that deserved a little more drama than simply being painted red. Very well painted, studio-level red, but still just red.

Client instructions

The client wanted Logan Grimnar to feel like a true centrepiece for their Space Wolves force, not just another character model. Since I already knew this client, we had actually discussed the model before, especially how we thought the axe should look. The official version is mostly red. Well-painted red. We thought the Axe of Morkai deserved more flair, and best of all, the client agreed.
They absolutely loved it.

The Story & Process

We made a video using this project to talk about the ins and outs of commission painting: what clients ask for, what painters need to clarify, and how the work develops from a brief into a finished model.

This Logan Grimnar project was a good example because it involved more than simply painting a character. We had reference material, wolves, fur, armour, scenic basing, and the Axe of Morkai all competing for attention. The goal was to make the model feel heroic and unmistakably Space Wolves, while still keeping the final piece readable and personal to the client.

If you want to see more of how commission painting actually works behind the scenes, the video goes deeper into that process.

Summarised Process

  • Brief

We started by going back through the client’s brief, references, and the details that mattered most, especially the armour, wolves, fur, base, and Axe of Morkai.

  • Wolves

The wolves needed to feel natural and characterful, so we worked with reference material to build up the fur, markings, and colder Space Wolves atmosphere.

  • Details

We focused on the armour, gold, fur, weapons, and smaller details so Logan felt like a legendary Chapter Master rather than just another blue-armoured character.

  • Finale

Finally, we brought the model, wolves, base, and axe together so the whole piece felt cohesive, imposing, and ready to lead a Space Wolves force.
